As it takes less effort to transport it with its compact size, the transportation cost gets cheaper! In fact, I’ve had no issues storing mine in the car’s garage.

Bobcat configures an oil-cooling Deutz reliable engine that doesn’t overheat easily. Even if it does, rest assured that its cooling technology lowers the temperature once you quickly change, clean, or add oil.

So, even after the heavy-duty performance, you don’t need to replace the engine sooner. Due to the engine specifications, its lift capacity can reach beyond its standard 1900 lbs.

What Are the Common Bobcat 863 Problems?

Whether you buy a pre-owned or new Bobcat 863, its unit is likely to have some problems that you will face sooner or later. But relax! Here, I’ll let you get familiar with these and their quick solutions, as I have described below to prevent greater damage. 

Let’s get to see the 5 possible internal and external issues you’ll experience more or less with the Bobcat 863 new and used models –

#1- Loader’s Back Feels Lighter

While loading materials on a Bobcat 863 bucket, chances are the back unit of the loader will feel lighter. As a result, whenever you try to load near or more than 1900 lbs, the front will feel heavier than the back. I personally felt issues while positioning the rear tires. 

Thus, the front might tilt a bit. It’s an issue with the new and overused loader. To fix these operating capacity issues, I’d highly suggest following these steps –

• Step 1: Buy a specific counterweight kit that matches the specifications of your Bobcat 863 from the Bobcat online shop. 
• Step 2: Follow the kit installation guide to install the counterweights to the rear-end tires. 
•  Step 3: Go to a repair shop and replace the tires with tracks, or you can opt for solid tires to load more without feeling lighter in the loader’s backside. 

It generally costs around $1773 to install counterweight kits on four sides. I’d prefer spending less than that or half the price for the two rear sides. 

#2- Hydraulic System Malfunctions

Sometimes, due to weight load and lack of maintenance, the hydraulic pump fails to pump fluid. The cylinders can’t get enough power to lift the loader and it leads to reduced lifting capacity. Also, faulty pumps cause the piston to move slowly. 

So, the loader doesn’t respond to the inputs quickly, it delays operation. When hydraulic valves malfunction, you will have a hard time changing the bucket angles and positions. Once the bucket goes up/lower, you can’t lower/raise it.  

With these hydraulic issues, there is no way to perform heavy-duty functions! So here is how you can work around them – 

• Step 1: Inspect the hydraulic pumps/hoses for fluid leakage, if any, take it to the skid loader service shop to fix or replace the pumps with new ones.  
• Step 2: If the hoses seem loose, try to reach them with a wrench. And tighten the pipes by yanking the tool up and low. 
• Step 3: Check whether the loader cylinders have any dents on them or not. 
• Step 4: Remove the deformed ones and install new ones by following the instructions in the owner’s manual.
• Step 5: If the hydraulic compartments and engine have dirt, clean the units right away using a bristle brush. And with a pressure washer, I’d say cleaning up the engine is an effective way to maintain steady piston movement.

The hydraulic seal kit’s price ranges from around $26–$570. You will need to add a few bucks more to it to the technician for replacing or repairing the units. (Source)

#3- Engine Faults 

Old, wrong type of fluid and burnt engine oil causes the engine to overheat, and the piston expands. Fluid leaks from the unit, and the loader doesn’t get enough power to start the engine. And that’s when the operating capacity drops!

To keep the engine healthy, follow this expert-approved maintenance procedure for your Bobcat 863: 

• Step 1:  Add fuel recommended by the manufacturers. Don’t go for any oil that isn’t ideal for the Bobcat 863 engine.
• Step 2: If there are any signs of damage on the spark plugs and ignition coils, contact a professional to install functional units. 
• Step 3: Try to change the oil every 250 hours if you operate the loader in standard conditions. 
• Step 4: If you perform heavy–duty under extreme conditions, replace the oil in every.

The parts for the ignition coil replacement might cost around $35 to more than $300, depending on the quality.

And to change spark plugs, it might charge $92 to $341. The labor cost can be below or above $100.

#4- Broken or Damaged Battery

A broken or outdated battery won’t provide enough electrical charge to the vehicle. So, the skid loader fails to start its ignition.  

Moreover, an overcharged and undercharged battery doesn’t have the voltage required to activate the engine. And broken terminals also cause the cell to act up. 

In order to keep the ignition process quick and safe to start, maintain the battery with the guidelines below: 

• Step 1: Wear safety gloves and check the electrolyte level of the cell. 
• Step 2: If the electrolyte is not adequate, follow the battery manufacturer’s manual to fill in the level. I’d recommend trying this step only if your battery is a non-sealed wet one. 
• Step 3: With a voltmeter, check the voltage level of the cell. 
• Step 4: If the voltage isn’t sufficient, replace it with a recharged battery. 

A new battery for replacement costs between $495 to more than $500.

#5- Faulty Control Systems

The Joystick controls don’t act as per the input. Even if they do, the responses are pretty slow. As a result, you will struggle to control the steering. 

With such a faulty control system, you can’t turn the loader properly over rough terrains. I personally had difficulties digging during the snow on sloped areas. 

Here is how you can solve the issue –

• Step 1: Tighten any loose steering connections and connect them in the correct way. 
• Step 2: Make sure the safety switches connections are functioning. If not, connect them straight away.  
• Step 3: If nothing makes the Joystick respond, you must change the entire Joystick control circuit.

Minor repairs in the Joystick system won’t cost you anything. But to install a new circuit, I’d say you need to spend approximately $200 to $500 except for the labor cost. (Source).
