5 Most Common Problems With Bobcat s70 (+Troubleshooting)

Bobcat S70 is probably the smallest but effective loader in the bobcat lineup. From my observation, it is designed to work in tight specs due to its compactness and maneuverability.

The descent hydraulic capacity with 3,000 psi and 9.8 gal/min Auxiliary Std Flow provides power to handle many attachment types and materials. However, like any other machine, over time, Bobcat can develop several issues that need to be solved.

Despite the fact that this is my first time as a professional mechanic working on the S70, my prior experience working on the S590, S62, and S64 helped me to resolve many common S70 complaints recently. Thus, I decided to write everything I knew about S70.

bobcat s70 Key Features and Benefits

Actually, the three key points define the Bobcat S70 skid steer loader. These include operating weight, lift capacity, and overall size. The operating weight, which is 2892 lb, refers to the weight of the machine along with the attachments.

On the other hand, lifting capacity simply means that S70 can safely lift and carry up to 760 lbs without any issues.

Finally, the Bobcat S70’s ability to maneuver through tight spaces thanks to its small size is perhaps its most notable characteristic. In addition to these key elements Bobcat has other key features and benefits that include the following:

  • Performance

Bobcat can deliver a more balanced performance, not too high or less. The whole machine is designed in a way that it can provide the best hydraulic performance despite the compact size.

  • Reliable Protection

Construction sites are full of hazards. Thankfully, Bobcat was designed with that in mind. Especially if the site is in cold weather, the Bobcat diesel engine can tackle the potential threat of cold weather on Bobcat.

  • Safety and Comfort

Bobcat ensures operator comfort and safety by providing many unique features. It comes with mount casting and engine mount isolators that can reduce vibration. On the other hand, the precise instrumental panel keeps the driver well-informed.

Above all, the operator does not have to worry about visibility while operating. It offers visibility that allows operators to work with 100% accuracy.

  • Small But Powerful

Surprisingly, the bobcat is more powerful than one expects from its size; it offers a 23.5 hp engine, which is enough to handle a bit of a heavy task. Also, it can reach a top speed of 10 km/h, although a bit slower on rough terrain.

What Are the Common Bobcat S70 Problems?

Just like any other machine that needs fuel to run itself, Bobcat runs into issues over time. From my experiences dealing with other Bobcat models, I can tell that common problems usually come either from engine, drive system, hydraulic, or from electrical issues.

In any case, you need to identify the problem, get the root cause of it, and take the best course of action to fix it.

Sometimes, it might be difficult to find the root cause of the problem; in that case, you might have to troubleshoot and find the cause and fix it. I will address them in detail.

Now, let me introduce you to the most common complaints that owners and operators usually make about Bobcat S70.

  • Hydraulic Lift and Tilt Not Working
  • Having Trouble Getting Bobcat S70 To Star
  • Park Brake Failure
  • Faulty Drive System
  • Faulty Starter Motor

5 Solutions For bobcat s70 Common Problems

The final step in any problem is to find a solution. But first, you must figure out how the problem started. Once the problem is identified, the rest is easy. In this part I will discuss the above-mentioned problems of S70, including how to find the main culprit behind the issue and a step-by-step guide to fix it.

#1- Hydraulic lift and tilt Not Working: Replace Solenoid and Checking Crucial Components

One of the common complaints that owners and operators of Bobcat S70 make is either the lift and tilt Not Working or works intermittently. You must identify the underlying causes of the problems in both scenarios.

This lift and tilt system consists of a hydraulic pump, hydraulic hoses, hydraulic cylinders, and control valves. The lift system might not function properly if one of these parts is malfunctioning.

So, in order to fix the problem, you must look under the seat to identify the problematic component. The hydraulic compartment of the Bobcat S70 is located under the seat.

In one of my cases, I had to remove the seat and replace the solenoid to get the lift and tilt system in working order. Make sure to check the damaged wiring to the solenoid. On the other hand, sometimes the solution lies in checking the following things.

  • Do not forget to inspect the Fluid level
  • One of the fuses could possibly be blown. In that case, replace the blown fuses.
  • Test if the sensor and safety interlock wiring is ok
  • Check the Seat switch circuit
  • Remove any potential fault codes

#2- Having Trouble Getting Bobcat S70 To Start: Replace Fuel Solenoid

This is probably the most common issue bobcat owners may face several times during their bobcat operating life. Starting related issues can be divided into 2 ways.

First, the engine won’t turn over, which means the engine is not turning or cranking at all when the key is turned in the ignition.

The second one: The engine is turning or cranking once the key is turned but having trouble running the engine.

So, depending on the nature of the problem, the solution may differ. If the Bobcat S70 won’t turn over you need to do the following:

  • Step 1: The first thing to do is to check the battery’s voltage
  • Step 2: If the voltage is fine, inspect the starter motor and ignition switch. Replace either one of the two if it is defective.
  • Step 3: After following the above steps, if the issue remains, inspect all the safety switches including the lap bar, brake, and neutral safety switch.

After checking all the things, Hopefully, the issue of not turning or cranking the Bobcat S70 will no longer remain. On the other hand, if you experience the second scenario: the engine will crank but you may encounter difficulty in starting or running the engine. If so, you need to carry out the following.

  • Step 1: Start with the basic one: check the fuel tank for enough oil. If no add oil
  • Step 2: Check the fuel system. Start with the injection pump; it may not be in the run position. It could be due to an issue with the fuel solenoid.
  • Step 3: Check the air filter, fuel filter, and fuel line for clogging. Finally, examine the ignition coil as well as spark plug.

Usually, Bobcat faces difficulty in starting the engine due to oil failing to reach the engine. If you do the following I have mentioned earlier, Hopefully, the issue will be fixed.

#3. Bobcat S70 Park Brake Failure: Replace the Park Brake Solenoid

You might have already faced this event if you have been operating S70 for a few years. In S70, when the left side of the switch is pressed, the red light in the switch will be turned on, which means the parking brake is engaged.

The problem is that Even if the parking brake is engaged, it fails to hold, and the S70 rolls down, which is alarming. Typically, mechanics will examine the entire braking system to determine the root cause.

In most cases, the most likely cause is the damaged park brake solenoid. Anyway, if you want to carry out the troubleshooting, you need to do the following.

  • Step 1: The very first component to see is the brake pads. If it is damaged, replace the worn brake pads
  • Step 2: One of the most likely reasons for brake failure is the damaged park brake solenoid. When the solenoid is damaged, it fails to engage the parking brake. Thus replace the Damaged park brake solenoid.
  • Step 3: On the instrumental panel in S70 check all the switches including the park brake switch
  • Step 4: In addition, examine the linkage between the lever and the braking mechanism.

These are the essential procedures you must adhere to in order to complete the DIY project. Allow a qualified mechanic to handle the job if you lack confidence.

#4. Bobcat S70 Faulty Drive System: Replace Drive motor and fix Leaks

If the bobcat drive system has any fault, the loader may not perform the intended task properly due to its inability to move. Identifying the root cause of the drive system failure is a challenging job to be done by yourself.

It could be due to an electrical problem, a malfunctioning motor or pump, or other mechanical issues. Thus you need assistance from a professional mechanic to inspect the system and find the primary failure point.

Here is a step-by-step process that you can follow to fix the Bobcat S70 drive system issue.

  • Step: First and foremost, you must determine whether there is a hydraulic leak. The seal may be worn out and allow fluid to flow
  • Step 2: If there is no leak, the next thing to do is to check out the pump and motor. In Bobcat S70, the most likely reason for drive failure is the malfunctioning motor.
  • Step 3: If the motor is fine, check all the connections, including the wiring and sensor.
  • Step 4: Finally, check the drive chain that sends power to the wheels

It is also important to check the proper fluid level, liquid viscosity, or air in the hydraulic system. As you can see, finding out the right reason is challenging to fix a faulty drive system. Thus, you might need a professional.

#5. Bobcat S70 Faulty Starter Motor: Replace the starter motor

Over time the starter motor can become damaged, or general wear and tear can happen. If your bobcat becomes old, you might face a starter motor issue.

When the key is turned to start the Bobcat, but the engine won’t turn over, it indicates that the starter motor of the S70 is faulty.

In addition to natural wear and tear, low voltage, weak battery, or corroded terminals can prevent the starter motor from working. To solve the issue, check whether the battery is strong enough to start the motor.

If the battery is fine but still the motor is inactive, probably the motor itself is faulty. In that situation, you must swap out the starter motor.
